5 July 2024

As the summer of 2024 brings more clouds than sunshine and puts outdoor adventures on hold, it’s the ideal time to dive into some captivating TV series. From crime dramas to comedies, and everything in between, this season has plenty of shows to keep you entertained. Here’s our top five TV series that will turn your summer days from dreary to delightful.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder | BBC

Holly Jackson’s bestselling novel for young adults has been adapted into a six-part drama by Red Rose screenwriter Poppy Hogan. This teen crime thriller follows nerdy Pippa Fitz-Amobi (Emma Myers, Wednesday) as she investigates the murder of fellow schoolgirl Andie Bell. While everyone believes Andie was killed by her boyfriend, Sal Singh, Pip suspects the real killer is still at large. She teams up with Sal’s younger brother, Ravi (Zain Iqbal), to investigate. You can expect plenty of teenage angst and antics as the pair search for justice. Look out for Anna Maxwell Martin (Line of Duty) and Gary Beadle (Rye Lane) as Pip’s parents and Mathew Baynton (Ghosts) also stars.

Douglas Is Cancelled | ITV

Hugh Bonneville (Downtown Abbey) and Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) star in Primetime Emmy and BAFTA-winning screenwriter Steven Moffat’s satirical comedy drama about cancel culture as TV news broadcasters Douglas and Madeleine. When an accusation surfaces on social media that Douglas made an ill-advised joke at a private family wedding, his reputation and career hang in the balance. What will he do next? Who is on his side? And, more importantly, What exactly did he say? These are the questions that will keep you guessing throughout this series.

The Jetty | BBC

In this new four-part crime drama, Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman plays Detective Ember Manning, who is tasked with investigating a devastating fire at a Lancashire holiday home. The plot thickens as the fire is connected to a podcaster delving into the 17-year-old cold case of a missing teenager, which unveils sinister underage relationships and twisted friendships. The series also features Matthew McNulty (Deadwater Fell), Peter Sullivan (Poldark), and Rick Warden (Happy Valley).

Suspect Series Two | Channel 4

The second series of Suspect returns to Channel 4 this summer. Anne-Marie Duff (Shameless and Sex Education) reprises her role as Dr. Susannah Newman, now on a desperate quest to find the truth about her daughter’s tragic death. Dominic Cooper (Preacher and Mamma Mia!) joins the cast as Jon Fallow, Newman’s mysterious new client who makes a disturbing confession under hypnosis. This revelation propels her into a perilous mission to save a life, seeking redemption for failing to save her own daughter.

Cumbria: The Lakes and The Coast | Channel 5

If drama isn’t your thing, this new Channel 5 series exploring the Lake District and Cumbria’s coast might provide the escapism you’re looking for. Narrated by Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter, the series, which was filmed in summer 2023, features a range of people and places in its celebration of both old and new traditions in one of the UK’s most popular holiday destinations. From historic homes and ancient gardens to steamboat operators, wild swimmers and gin distillers, there’s plenty to discover in this five-part series.
