And the winner is

22 March 2023

The year kicked off with a flurry of glittering film awards. In January, The Golden Globe Awards honoured the best in film and American television of 2022; The British Academy Film (BAFTA) Awards took place in March and celebrated the best British and international contributions to film and, finally, the red carpet was rolled out for the Oscars which honoured films released in 2022.

We never need an excuse to settle down with popcorn and watch a good film. Here are our favourite film channels on Freeview where we can take our pick from sizzling romances, big screen blockbusters, high octane action or simply indulge in a little nostalgia.

Lights, cameras, action

GREAT! movies is a Freeview channel offering free-to-air blockbusters, contemporary hits, cult classics and feature-film favourites. It covers the full range of genres, so if you’re looking for a rom-com, a hard-hitting action movie, summer blockbusters or critically-acclaimed indie films, this channel has it all.

GREAT! movies also has two other channels on Freeview: GREAT! movies action and GREAT! Romance. If it’s a no-holds-barred action movie or an old-school or modern classic romance, these channels are for you.

Film4

Film4 offers a great variety of movies covering a range of genres. It has also created and produced many of the most recently successful UK films including Academy Award winner Slumdog Millionaire. And if you miss your favourite film or want to watch it again, you can catch up on Film 4 +1, also available on Freeview.

The good old days

For those who love the nostalgia of the good old days of film and television, Talking Pictures TV features silent movies, the grit and glamour of the 30s and 40s, the fun and energy of the 50s and 60s through to the modern era of the space-age 70s. Whether it’s westerns or weepies, comedies or creepies, Talking Pictures TV lets us relive some of the rarest and greatest gems from film history.

If you’ve grabbed the popcorn, dimmed the lights, and have settled back to enjoy a film (or two) and you notice new interference to your free to view TV – there’s a small chance it may be due to mobile signal upgrades.
